Walk with us for Merdeka: A Million Steps for Unity and National Pride

Malaysians and friends of Malaysia are invited to join a heartfelt and powerful community event at Stadium Merdeka Kuala Lumpur on 16 August 2025.

“We need 100 passionate Malaysians and friends of Malaysia to help us achieve a monumental goal – to collectively walk one million steps in celebration of our nation’s 68th Independence Day,” said Nikki Yeo, Cofounder of Move8.org, a fitness advocacy platform.

On Saturday, 16 August 2025, all are invited to the grounds where Malaysia was born: the historic Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. “This isn’t just a walk; it’s a way to commemorate the space, a UNESCO-heritage listed site that cradles our nation now managed under the purview of the Merdeka and experience the echoes of “Merdeka!” by the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman.

From 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, we’ll walk a total of 11,000 steps each, making 20 rounds of the 400-meter track. By coming together, we can symbolically retrace the steps of our forefathers and walk towards a shared, unified future.

This is your chance to be more than a spectator. We want to hear your voice! Our film crew will be on-site all day to capture “vox pops” (voice of the public) on the theme, “What Merdeka Means to Me.” We believe every Malaysian’s story is a vital thread in our national tapestry. Share your personal journey, your memories, and your hopes for the future.

Can’t be there in person? You can still be a part of this movement! Share your own story on social media using the hashtags #mymerdeka, #stadiummerdeka, and #move8.
